What makes Drupal great? The community of idealists and enthusiasts who have found many great ways of helping each other and working together. Are you new to Drupal? Want to feel closer to the community? Want to know where and how to get help? I hope the answer is yes as great benefits are yours for the having. In this presentation you'll learn to get the most out of the community, AND you'll learn about ways you can give back too. "To whom much is given much is expected"...

UPDATE - Slideshare and IRC Setup/Cheatsheet posted!

See above for slideshare. I recommend you click the link to view this ON slideshare. Once on slideshare click the Notes tab just beneath the slideshow where you can see my presenter notes!

Also, as promised here is a link to my "How to install chatzilla and IRC cheatsheet":
Install chatzilla to connect to Drupal IRC chatrooms and IRC command cheatsheet/links.

And on the "I knew I was going to forget something..." front, here is one more resource I forgot to mention:

Email Mailing Lists at http://drupal.org/mailing-lists. Conceptually similar in some ways to forums, but email based and not as well known. They are archived so it is easy to see what sort of traffic they get.

Agenda
This presentation will cover both connecting with and understanding the community of Drupal.

  • It's free? Really?
  • Who is Drupal Core?
  • The chat rooms (aka IRC) and the friendly robot that haunts them
  • Forums
  • Issue Queues and how to use them
  • Important feeds to keep up with
  • Meetups, Camps, Cons, Dojo, ...
  • twitter
  • What kind of Drupaller do you want to be?
  • How you can help

Goals

You should come away from my presentation with a better understanding of the Drupal Community. What makes is awesome, and what are some of the many ways to connect to it. I'll add instructions to get an IRC client running on your computer prior to the session for the various operating systems (Linux, MAC, and yes even Windows ;) ) so there will even be some hands on fun!

Resources

Well, that's what the session will cover yes? Seriously if you are planning to come to this session (assuming it is accepted) check back a couple of days before the camp for instructions on downloading and installing a free irc client for your favorite operating system so you can more easily follow along for that portion of the presentation.

A good twitter client would be cool too if you are into that sort of thing (I am!).
